Paths to compliance with
'The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010'
When assessing a personal UV light exposure scenario in the workplace, the crucial question is can a clear and unambiguous statement be made that the UV light exposure limit values are observed or exceeded.
Employers must assess the level of risk for adverse health effects by determining personal UV exposure levels and comparing with the exposure limit values. This can be done by:
Referring to UV light source manufacturer’s data which should include:
- Risk group classification, in accordance with BS EN 62471 : 2008.
- UV light emission category in accordance with BS EN 12198 (where applicable).
- Hazard values and hazard distances.
OR
Where there is inadequate information - conduct or arrange UV light measurements and assessment
Workers must not be exposed above the exposure limit values and must be provided with specific information and training.
Our step by step ‘Paths to Compliance with The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010’ are designed to help employers meet their legal obligations for the safe use of UV light in the workplace.
Path 1 - Reference to UV light source manufacturer’s data
1. Attend our one day training course ‘Risk management of UV light exposure in the workplace’ to gain a practical insight into risk assessment and control of personal UV light exposure from artificial sources.
2. Undertake risk assessment of your UV light personal exposure scenario or review any existing risk assessments.
3. Implement any additional control measures considered necessary, including information and training for workers.
Path 2 - UV light measurements and assessment
1. Attend our one day training course ‘Risk management of UV light exposure in the workplace’ to gain a practical insight into risk assessment and control of personal UV light exposure from artificial sources
2. Following discussions during the course, implement any control measures and safe working practices considered necessary
3. Where appropriate confirm date with UV Light Technology Limited for on-site UV light measurement and assessment
4. Immediately prior to the date fit new UV bulbs or tubes in equipment and clean reflectors and filter glass (where fitted).
5. UV Light Technology Limited attends site, conducts UV light measurements and assessment and submits your report
6. Undertake risk assessment of your UV light personal exposure scenario or review any existing risk assessments. Implement any additional control measures considered necessary, including information and training for workers.
7. Where necessary confirm date with UV Light Technology for validation
